Hospice for at-risk care leavers
In Bulgaria, there is a forgotten generation of vulnerable, young care leavers who are victims of a resource gap, leaving them without a place to live and unable to build the confidence to gain skills and find jobs.
The Serdica Commune combines Brutalist doctrine with monastic principles, providing a place of personal development for the support and skills that are needed to transition young care leavers into the community.
On a spring morning, the sun penetrates into the Commune's courtyard through the double height entrance. A shadow of a resident walking across the bridge is projected on the concrete wall. The column rises from the cooling pool. Dormitories on the upper, private strata.
Due to the nature of the building's typology - a combination of public and private - separation is achieved by positioning the designated areas on different levels. The Commune can be accessed by residents both from the upper street (8m above), and the lower, busier level.
