"In the modern world, the human desire to express has not only manifested itself in art – the unmeasurable - ...but in the measurable – the machine, leading to the fear that the path taken will lead civilisation to extinction. In the early years of the post-industrial age, Bruno Taut was inspired by the new technology for the spiritual reaction it could evoke rather than for the physical purpose of the building. However, the machine age that followed brought with it modernism, and in the excitement about what could be achieved with the material, the immaterial was left behind – the measurable took over the unmeasurable, and the silence spoken of by Kahn was lost."
